Here are 6 fab reasons to wear Wild Stripes Thermal Base Layers:
  1. They will keep you warm and snug:  Polypropylene base layers should be worn directly against the skin because they have an insulating power higher than any other fibre or fabric.  They protect from extremes in temperature by trapping a layer of air next to your skin to maintain body temperature at a constant level.
  2. They will keep you dry and cosy:  Perspiration on the skin causes that ‘clammy’ cold feeling. As polypropylene base layers are non-absorbent they transfers perspiration away from the skin to the outer surface of the garment, where it either evaporates or is absorbed into outer clothing layers.  This excellent wicking (moisture transfer) characteristic keeps the body warm and dry.
  3. They are kind to your skin:  Polypropylene is totally chemically neutral.  It is non-allergenic, antibacterial and odour free.  Our base layers are non-itchy and can be safely worn by people with sensitive skin.
  4. They are lightweight yet tough:  Our polypropylene thermals are made from the lightest fibre known to man (31% lighter than wool and 40% lighter than cotton!) which gives the garments bulk without weight.  Our polypropylene base layers are very hardwearing and have outstanding abrasion resistance.
  5. They are easy care and very quick drying:  Polypropylene’s resistance to moisture and sunlight also make it colourfast and resistant to stains.  Our base layers are machine washable in warm or hot water, will never run, and are very quick drying (in 20% of the time needed for a woollen garment!).
  6. They are environmentally friendly and ethically made:  No harmful substances are incorporated in polypropylene’s chemical structure.  The yarn we use is spun under the highest environmental standards and then knitted and made into our thermal base layers by a small company in New Zealand.  We are very careful about the packaging we use and take our responsibility to reduce our environmental impact very seriously.  Oh, and polypropylene is also suitable for vegans!

On the line in Norfolk

We’re currently stocking 100% polypropylene, NZ made thermal long sleeve t-shirts and long johns in 7 colour patterns

 Menace

This bold pattern is sure to get you noticed for all the right reasons, whether you are on the mountain, on the road, or just in the garden. Our 100% polypropylene Isofil fabric is what is known in the trade as ‘dope pigmented’ which is probably not what you think but means the yarn that makes our fabric is not dyed but coloured before spinning and so it will not fade and is really durable and stain resistant.

Sweet Shop (not Sweat Shop)

Yummy like a jar of your favourite sweets, not miserable like a 14 hour day in a sweatshop somewhere hot.
Do you know where your clothes really come from?  Wearing these gorgeous colours you can be absolutely sure that they were made by a lovely company in New Zealand by properly looked after employees with safe and fair working conditions.

Baa. Ram. Ewe.

Baa Ram Ewe (blues and oranges and reds)

Although our garments have no connection with sheep, other than their association with New Zealand (where there are more sheep than people), this design was inspired by the stage lighting at our favourite Bristol live music venue! (geddit?)

Wild Striped Base Layers rock!!  (Great for climbers too ;-) )

Ahoy There!

Hello Sailor (Navy, grey and Red StripesA very classy stripe, but also very versatile.  These will keep you cosy warm whether you’re at Beaulieu, Bognor or Balmoral!

Now, our stripes won’t keep you dry if you literally go in the drink… However polypropylene is what they call ‘hydrophobic’ which means that the fabric cannot hold moisture and has what rugged outdoorsy types call ‘outstanding moisture handling’.  In practice this means that you won’t get that horrid clammy feeling and won’t chill if you get soggy with drizzle or sweat.  Wild Stripes Base Layers may be hydrophobic, but you don’t have to be!

Wild and Striped Cammo

Wild Stripes Cammo (greens, greys and maroon)  Vibrantly understated, this design is great if you love Wild Stripes Base Layers but don’t want to scare the birds or want to harmonise more with the natural environment. We only source from suppliers and manufacturers who are continually working to minimise environmental impact, and once you’ve worn them out (which may take quite a while!) you can send them back to us and we will make sure that they are recycled properly. And so the world keeps on turning…

Honfleur

Gorgeous cream and dark navy (looks black in the photo, eh?) This stripe takes its name from the little harbour on the North coast of France, and is based on the classic Breton stripe.
So named because Claire vividly remembers the first time she saw a striped Breton top - on holiday on the family boat along the North French coast.  Gilling about waiting to lock into Honfleur (an experience as you will know if you are familiar with the ‘French mooring style’ that neccesitates keen nerves and a sharp eye), one of the other boats had a lady with long flowing dark hair sitting on the stern rail playing a squeeze box as they all pirouetted and jostled.  It was a beautiful wooden yacht, shiny with varnish, and the lady was of course wearing a Breton top.  To this day it is still one of the coolest things Claire has ever seen.

The Nihilist

The Nihilist (black) This is, erm, black with black stripes?  ….No? There’s no fooling you is there… Okay, it’s the one for those of you who don’t really dig the stripes but need the outstanding thermal properties of polypropylene. (Remember, there’s no such thing as bad weather, just innapropriate clothing!)

However, please leave the rug alone man… It really ties the room together.

What colour are your stripes?

Comments from some satisfied customers:

“These really are the bees knees, kept our boys toasty warm on Pilsbury castle at the weekend. Can’t wait to test drive them in the snow!!! “  Nikki, Derbyshire

“I can’t believe my order placed yesterday about 4.00p.m. has arrived this morning!  Fantastic service & so good as I can give them to my son, head greenkeeper on a golf course, for his birthday on Sunday.  I just love my set, so cosy.  Great for riding on Dartmoor too!”   Jenny, Devon

“Over the snowy Christmas holidays I wore my Wild Stripes thermals for four days running:  around the house, a spot of gardening, shopping in town and dog walking in the park.  Best of all, they were really appreciated on long country ramble ending along the seafront as the sun went down.  They are are light and warm and do not look bulky under outdoor clothing, but are still fun and attractive if you want to be seen in them!  I can’t take mine off!” Jennie, Norfolk

They’re amazing and I’ve really noticed the difference wearing them in the cold weather“    Steve, RSPB Fundraiser

“Funky colours, really cosy and look great on (for thermals!!) – what’s not to love about them?! Love that they’re high waisted and long in the body – what’s the point of having clothing designed to keep you warm if there’s a gaping gap between where they meet…? (I’ve had this happen, my lower back objected very much!). They also dry uber quickly too – which is a bonus if you’re a little disorganised (like me) and decide last minute you really need them for the next day… Oh, and did I mention they’re super snuggly? In the home, on walks, even under skinny jeans on nights out – perfect!”    Nadia, Bristol

“I’ve been wearing this on it’s own through the summer months and I never fail to be amazed at how comfortable it is, even on hot days when my old Lifa top would have felt ‘plasticy’. Under a shell it’s the same story, it may be damp to the touch but I never feel ‘chilled’. I can even get away with several days consecutive wear without washing!”

“We’ve been using the Wild Stripes top for the past few weeks and for general use, we’re very happy with it. It dries fast, seems to wick decently, or at least not hold water, which is half the battle and, importantly, unlike first generation Lifa, doesn’t stink after an hour’s hard use.
The bottom line so far is that it gets on with the job in a low-key, efficient way, feels nice and comfortable against the skin even when working hard and washes fine…. the good news is that you can have the styling and decent performance at the same time”

“The biggest shock was moisture management. The Cul Mor trip was warm with a cool breeze, I was sweating all the way but kept on a windshirt to keep an equilibrium of sorts. When I got to camp I saw that I was wringing wet, the windshirt on the outside was dark with sweat all over. I pulled off the shirt to put on my insulation and to my amazement I was bone dry underneath, even the skin under the stripes was dry. The polypro just fires sweat out, and by its nature absorbs none at all. I also noticed that at rest/photies stops my sweaty back didn’t feel clammy at all when I started back up, no shivers or chills despite the cold wind and wet back, even my pack was soaked where it was resting on my back. Outstanding performance”

“Wild Stripes thermals are the first I’ve seen that I actually want to wear and don’t feel like I’m wearing base layers for function, rather than form. They’re warm, cosy and haven’t got smelly yet. The price seems competitive, and I like the fact that they’re from a small supplier, with the personal touch. I had a texture issue with them at first – they didn’t feel like traditional thermals – but this seemed fine once they were on. Can’t fault them!”
